Partner with us in developing the transformative Mophane City International Cargo Airport.
The Mophane City International Cargo Airport (MCIA) Project is a transformative initiative designed to establish Botswana as the premier air cargo and passenger hub in Southern Africa. Featuring state-of-the-art infrastructure, a strategic location, and innovative design, MCIA is poised to redefine air travel and cargo operations throughout the continent, driving economic growth and enhancing international trade
The Botswana government is developing a 100,000-hectare industrial and commercial zone in Central Botswana along a key logistics route connecting South Africa's sea ports, Kazungula Bridge, Zambia, and extending into Africa. This route handles millions of tons of goods traveling from Africa to international markets and back.
Botswana's 123 Dimensions (Pty)Ltd. is developing a USD 15 billion international cargo airport and township, creating 15,000 permanent jobs, with an additional 40,000 to 60,000 jobs from the surrounding industrial and commercial hub.
Upon completion, the MCIA will handle 20-30 large international cargo flights daily and manage up to 500,000 tonnes of cargo per year.
The project includes a cargo terminal, a passenger terminal, and a Maintenance Repair and Overhaul facility, aiming to serve Southern and the rest of Africa. It will initially handle 5 million passengers annually, expanding to 20 million
The passenger terminal will adopt the “airport as a city” concept, featuring distinct “neighborhoods” with unique characters. This development will turn Botswana from a transport corridor into a continental economic hub, establishing the airport as a premier air travel center.
The Mophane City International Airport (MCIA) project aims to position Botswana as a major player in African air cargo, creating a state-of-the-art cargo and passenger hub that addresses regional logistical challenges and boosts economic development in Botswana and the Southern African Development Community (SADC).
The MCIA will adhere to global standards, featuring two 4.8 km runways designed for large aircraft. These runways, meeting the latest international standards, will enhance capacity and traffic flow, supporting ICAO Code 3C/D standard 787-800 airbuses.
MCIA will feature a modern terminal, spacious hangars, a cutting-edge maintenance workshop, an extensive taxiway system, and a large storage warehouse. These facilities will enhance cargo handling and passenger services, setting new standards for regional air travel and transport.
The MCIA project includes the development of Mophane Township with a Central Business District, Industrial Park, hospital, 5-star airport hotel, sports complex, international conference center, duty-free mall, and various civic and community facilities. This integrated urban ecosystem will serve airport employees, passengers, and local communities, enhancing the area’s overall functionality and appeal
The passenger terminals will accommodate up to 23 million passengers annually,
primarily connecting travelers from surrounding countries to global destinations.
Leveraging Botswana's security and peace, the project will model itself after leading
global connecting airports.
Mophane Airport aims to become Africa’s top hub, strategically positioned on trade routes between Europe, Asia, and the Americas. Its modern terminals will feature efficient layouts, excellent food and shopping options, and extensive hospitality and duty-free offerings, making it a prime location in Sub-Saharan Africa.
To handle growing air traffic in Southern Africa, MCIA will invest in cutting-edge infrastructure, aiming to become one of the region’s and continent’s busiest airports, welcoming millions of passengers annually.
Its designed modern terminals, efficient operations, and luxurious amenities shall make it more than just a transit point; but an experience.
The project's central location enhances accessibility for trucking companies from neighboring countries such as Zambia, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Malawi, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Angola.
Botswana, with low tax rates, no foreign exchange controls, and minimal labor strife, is well-positioned to leverage its strategic location as a gateway to the southern African market, benefiting from its membership in SADC and SACU.
Botswana’s independent judiciary offers strong protection of property rights, boosting investor confidence and making it an ideal location for major investments in Africa.
The MCIA project will boost Botswana's air cargo infrastructure and competitiveness, stimulate economic growth, create jobs, and build local capacity. It will elevate Botswana's role in the global diamond trade and serve as a gateway for other industries, promoting economic diversification and adding value.
The MCIA will create a state-of-the-art facility capable of handling millions of tonnes of cargo annually, addressing the SADC region's growing air cargo needs. The project supports the RESET agenda, which aims to reboot Botswana's economy through transformative strategies.
In conclusion, the Mophane City International Airport project offers a major opportunity for Botswana and the SADC region, aligning with the Government's goals of economic diversification, citizen empowerment, and private sector involvement. International investors are invited to join this transformative and profitable venture.
